The
BOCES Board of Education: Volunteering to lead us forward
Most of us are familiar with boards
of education, or school boards, groups of local people who serve as
volunteers to help guide our local elementary, middle and high schools.
Board of education members are elected by the public and meet on a regular
basis, usually monthly. The Capital Region Career & Technical School is no
different.
Career
& Tech is operated by the Capital Region Board of Cooperative Educational
Services, or BOCES, and our BOCES is governed by a policy-making board of
education. The 10 BOCES Board of Education members serve three-year terms
and are elected through a special vote held each April by the boards of
education governing the schools we serve, also known as our component
schools.
BOCES Board members represent and are accountable to the component school
boards. The duties and responsibilities of our Board members include:
- Providing shared educational services to our component schools.
- Conducting needs assessments and long-range planning for BOCES and our
component school districts.
- Employing teachers and support staff to carry out BOCES programs.
- Preparing an annual BOCES budget and overseeing expenditures
throughout the year.
- Setting policies for the organization and plans for future growth and
change.
- Appointing district superintendents (subject to the approval of the
New York State Commissioner of Education).
The
Capital Region BOCES District Superintendent works closely with our Board
members to implement state laws and board policies and directions.
