Children & Education Career Academy

Help shape the future. If you would like to work with children or become an elementary, preschool or special education teacher, Career & Tech's unique, full-day Children & Education Career Academy is the place to be! 

The Academy is an exciting program is based at Cobleskill-Richmondville High School that unites the best qualities of career and technical education and academic study with the ability to earn college credit while still in high school. By the time you complete your studies at the Children & Education Career Academy, you'll be on your way to earning an associate's or bachelor's degree in education or child development. 

As an Academy student, you'll enjoy learning with peers who share your interests and talents. Through focused study, hands-on experiences and specialized academics, you'll explore the worlds of elementary, preschool and special education and child development, and have fun, too!

Your teachers will provide you with a great foundation of knowledge and a solid base for continued study at college. You'll also put classroom theory into practice by working with young children in a variety of settings, including local elementary schools, preschools and child development centers. Your academic classes - Regents math, English, social studies, science - will relate lessons to the field of education whenever possible.

Lots of students enjoy afterschool clubs, sports and community projects. After completing your day at the Academy, you'll be able to return to your home school to participate in such activities.

Units of study:
- Child growth and development
- Introduction to elementary and early childhood education, birth to age 8
- Expressive arts
- Guidance, discipline and observations of young children
- Parent/teacher/community involvement
- Special needs children
- Establishing & maintaining a safe, healthy learning environment
- Curriculum methods/program management
- Specialized Regents English, math, social studies, science

Career possibilities:
- Elementary teacher
- Preschool teacher/director
- Special education teacher
- Child and/or family agency professional
- Head Start teacher
- Teacher assistant
- Special needs assistant
- After-school program coordinator or aide
- Human services professional
- Family day care provider
- Speech therapist
- Child psychologist

Prerequisites:
-Grade point average of 80 or higher.
-Global Studies, Math A, 2 lab sciences.
-Record of positive attendance and behavior.
-Current physical, TB Mantoux test, fingerprinting, child abuse clearance.
-Recommended: Child development or human development, food and nutrition, parenting or Pre-K course, art or music.

Portfolio
Students create a portfolio for presentation to teachers, peers, administrators, college admissions officials, and career professionals. The portfolio includes exemplary work and employability information and showcases your education, experience and talents.
