New Visions:
Journalism & Media Studies
(formerly Public Communications)
Students
can participate in the exciting and rapidly evolving world of communications
through New Visions: Journalism and Media Studies. Hosted at the Times
Union, the class provides opportunities to observe and work with
professionals in news writing, photography and production for print and
broadcast journalism. The program also includes a full broadcast career
exploration component at WMHT and offsite tours of radio stations, recording
studios, Hearst Corp. headquarters in Manhattan and broadcast properties in
Boston.
Students learn how digital technology is changing news gathering and
dissemination by participating in interactive projects with new media
technologies. Special projects will include blogging and covering photo and
video assignments for Timesunion.com.
Students also write, edit and publish their own student newspaper, The
Legacy, while maintaining the interactive Electronic Student Press

What others are saying:
“Robert
Frost once said ‘to be a poet is a condition, not a profession.’ The same is
true with journalism. It’s such a better alternative to sitting in school.
Being a part of this program is like finding your niche in journalism.”
-K.C. Orcutt, Class of 2008, New Visions: Journalism & Media Studies and
Guilderland H.S.
“I think it basically is a really good opportunity. It will help me decide
what area of journalism I want to pursue and how I want to advance in the
field.”
-Anita Vukovic Class of 2008, New Visions: Journalism & Media Studies and
Guilderland H.S.
