New Visions: Human Services & Special/Elementary Education

Are you someone who reaches out to others? The New Visions: Human Services & Special/Elementary Education program enables high school seniors to explore careers such as social work, psychology and special education.

The classroom is currently located in St. Catherine's Center for Children in Albany, where students learn through traditional methods (lecture, reading, research, writing and focused study) and through rotations. Rotations are structured observations of professionals and procedures in a career field.

IHuman Services & Special/Elementary students rotate through St. Catherine's, which employs professionals including special educators, speech therapists, occupational and physical therapists, psychologists and social workers, psychiatrists and recreational therapists. Students observe these professionals at work in classrooms for special needs students. The curriculum includes the child welfare system, culture of the deaf, juvenile justice, and implications of the Americans with Disabilities Act; explores all types of disabilities; and teaches the skills needed to be an effective human services worker.
