A bright future for future nurses: Senior PN Class of '06 celebrate their success at Aug. 17 graduation

Nurses are needed here in the Capital Region, across New York and throughout our nation. On August 17, seven successful grads celebrated their completion of Career & Tech's Practical Nursing (PN) program at a ceremony at the Albany campus dining room. Congratulations to Jacette Dobbs and Janiqua McNeil, who also graduated from Schenectady High School in June; Amanda Myers, also a Mohonasen High School graduate; Kayla Provost, also a Duanesburg High School graduate; and Megan Newell, Kayla Robinson and Alicia Ross, all of whom also graduated in June from Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk High School.

The seven graduates studied Practical Nursing at the Capital Region Career & Technical School during their junior and senior years of high school and during the summer school session that culminated in their August 17 graduation. They learned in campus classrooms and labs and through off-campus clinical experiences at several local healthcare facilities. They are now preparing to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) to become Licensed Practical Nurses. Some of the students also will continue their studies in college to pursue Registered Nurse and Bachelor of Science in Nursing degrees.

A focused and dedicated group, the students were awarded more than $30,000 in college scholarships and were honored at their graduation for excellence. Megan Newell received a certificate for highest academic average, 90%. However, Amanda Myers and Janiqua McNeil followed closely with averages of 89.9% and 89.5% academic averages, respectively.

Jacette Dobbs was honored for general excellence at the PN graduation ceremony. She also was nominated, this past May, for 2006 outstanding student of the year at Career & Tech's Albany campus. In addition, Dobbs was a first place winner, and Megan Newell took second place, at the SkillsUSA Regional Competition in Practical Nursing held at Schenectady County Community College in March.

Kayla Provost was honored for excellence in clinical practice at the PN graduation ceremony.

Besides completing their PN studies, Janiqua McNeil and Kayla Provost are also graduates of Career & Tech's Nurse Assistant program.

An overall shortage of health care professionals will worsen as those currently employed retire and as America's population ages and requires more medical attention. Career & Tech offers full-time- and part-time-study programs for adult students in Practical Nursing and Nurse Assistant; the Practical Nursing program for high school students is no longer offered. For more information, visit the Practical Nursing and Nurse Assistant pages of this Web site.
